Overseas SEO and Hosting

International Search Engine Marketing and Optimization has its challenges.  If you’re in the United States, and you’d like to optimize an overseas website, you’re in for a cultural surprise.   Search phrases and terminology in, let’s say, Germany are not the same as in the good ol’ USA.   Perhaps long tail phrases are more common overseas, or perhaps the foreign market you’re looking to enter is accustom to using hyphens or abbreviated keywords.

  1. First and foremost, do your homework.  Research the competition and analyze the keyword structures.
  2. You can host in the Unites States and look like a ‘local’ overseas, however I do not recommend it.  Search spiders will give preference (hey, it’s local afterall) so find a hosting company that’s reliable in the host country.  A TLD (top level domain) registered and hosted within the UK for instance is going to rank higher than one hosted in Los Estados Unidos people…face it, that’s the way Google likes it.
